Lateral Entry
Officers hired as Lateral Candidates do not attend the academy upon hire. Lateral entry is available for police and corrections officers who already have a valid Nevada Peace Office Standards and Training (POST) certification and a minimum of one (1) year of continuous service with a law enforcement agency in the performance of duties directly related to the applicable peace officer standard (Category I for police and Category III for corrections) immediately prior to completing the application.  Police officers who have a valid Category I POST certification from another state are also eligible for the lateral entry.  Open recruitment for Lateral Police and Corrections Officers will take place twice a year (January & July), for 30 days each recruitment cycle.

Police Recruits
Immediately upon hire, entry-level Police candidates attend the SOUTHERN DESERT REGIONAL POLICE ACADEMY (SDRPA) at the Community College of Southern Nevada . Attendees live off campus with their families and report to class as directed; routinely, Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with some schedule adjustments for certain training. The program is twenty-two weeks long.

The SDRPA is a joint agency academy managed by the North Las Vegas and Henderson Police Departments. Graduates receive 33 credits [Criminal Justice (30), English (3), and a Category 1 diploma, which is approved by the Nevada Peace Officer's standards and Training (POST) Committee.

Corrections Recruits
Immediately upon hire, entry-level Corrections candidates attend the Southern Nevada Law Enforcement Academy (SNLEA) at the City of Las Vegas Department of Detention and Enforcement. Attendees live off campus with their families and report to class as directed; routinely, Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with some schedule adjustments for certain training. The program is nine weeks long.
